Greater Boston South Sudanese Women’s Project
Who are the South Sudanese Women?
These South Sudanese women are survivors of the North/South civil war in Sudan. During their exile from their homes and villages, they experienced unimaginable war horrors, surviving in refugee camps across East Africa, and eventually being chosen for resettlement in the US. Today these Sudanese women possess undeniable courage and resilience and demonstrate strong family values; they are dedicated mothers, wives, and members of their American and Sudanese communities.
The Birth of The Women’s Project:
In late 2008, South Sudanese women in the greater Boston area held a meeting to discuss issues that matter to them as mothers, students, and members of larger Sudanese community. At that meeting, they decided to form The Women’s Project, a program dedicated to addressing the specific needs of the women as they aspire to reach their potentials.
Challenges:
Sudanese women face an array of issues including basic literacy, higher education, career development, childcare, self-empowerment, and other personal-development matters.
Solution:
The Sudanese Education Fund in January of 2009 implemented the Greater Boston South Sudanese Women’s Project. The program provides:
The Women’s Project has distributed funds for education , child care, child enrichment, citizenship, and driver’s education. Each woman has had an opportunity to apply for three distributions totaling $1900. The first distribution was for $800, the second was for $600 and currently the third is for $500. All the women who applied for the second distribution must use those funds by February 1, 2010. The third distribution must be used by July 1, 2010.
To support these South Sudanese women, we seek financial and volunteer support for The Women’s Project. Please contact us for ideas or if you would like to get involved!!!
